Interesting Facts About Sydney Opera House

1. 233 designs were submitted for the Opera House international design competition held in 1956. Jørn Utzon from Denmark was announced the winner, receiving ?5000 for his design.

2. Construction was expected to take four years. It took 14 years. Work commenced in 1959 and involved 10,000 construction workers.

3. The original cost estimate to build Sydney Opera House was $7 million. The final cost was $102 million and it was largely paid for by a State Lottery.

4. Sydney Opera House was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2007

5. Sydney Opera House was opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 20th October, 1973. She has since visited four times, most recently in 2006.

6. More than 8.2 million people visit the Opera House every year.

Liam Burrows Sings Come Fly With Me Australia’s Got Talent 2011 Semi-Finals

Liam Burrows performed Frank Sinatra’s Come Fly with Me last night at the 3rd Semi-Final round of Australia’s Got Talent 2011. Liam is this young 17 years old Central Coast, NSW lad who loves to sing Jazz, a very unique style of music. He sang I’ve got you Under My Skin in his earlier performance.

Watch 2011 Spectacular Sydney New Year's Eve Fireworks Display Finale

And the light’s went off at midnight! Sydney welcome 2011 with a spectacular New Year’s Eve fireworks display. News reports revealed that about seven tonnes of pyrotechnics were lit up that blazed a colourful fireworks display around the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It was estimated that around  1.5 million Sydney locals and tourists gathered at various vantage points to witness this grand new year’s eve spectacular show. Organizers described this event as  the greatest firework show on earth.
